A fast-paced, investigation tale. Covers San Francisco territory with a car chase. Covers some fictional tech material. Some smooching and some illogical material. The worst part is the writing is sloppy; vernacular is often incorrect, and the wrong version of certain words are substituted when the writer doesn't know any better. At first I did not understand it, but the writer often used the wrong spelling, mistakenly a word that sounds alike, but is spelled differently - I haven't actually seen a book written like this before. I left my heart in San Francisco in the 90s, so this book was a fun revisit of the city in all its groovy-ness.
It has car chases like Streets of San Francisco, funky characters like What's New Pussycat and a lot of software references that reminded me of those great glory days of Silicon Valley.
The character of Sputnik is one that I can see growing into a series. San Francisco and the Bay Area are full of great settings where Sputnik and his gang of nerdy cyber-thieves can keep trying to earn a buck on their own terms.
My favorite line "he is like a man dead already," spoken by an exasperated, would-be torturer.
